Austin FC has a 1W-3D-6L all-time record against Vancouver Whitecaps.
This has been one of the roughest matchups for the Verde and Black over the first five seasons of play, with the lone win over the Whitecaps coming back in April 2022 on the heels of Austin FC crashing out of the U.S. Open Cup against San Antonio FC. In that match, Maxi Urruti bagged a brace in the first half hour and Sebastián Driussi closed the door with a second half goal to seal a 3-0 ATX victory.
Vancouver Whitecaps Recent Form
As this is our first meeting with the Vancouver Whitecaps this season, let’s take a closer look at this Canadian MLS powerhouse.
While the ‘Caps didn’t join MLS until 2011, the team’s history starts long before that, dating back to 1974 when the Whitecaps were members of the NASL. Named not only for the snow-capped mountains, but for the waves percolating across the Pacific Ocean that borders western Vancouver, the Whitecaps played their first ever game on May 5, 1974, a 2-1 loss to another current MLS “phoenix club”, the San Jose Earthquakes. The team quickly became a big attraction in Canada and frequently drew crowds exceeding 30,000 people.
The club’s first ever championship came in 1979 when they defeated the Tampa Bay Rowdies to secure the NASL “Soccer Bowl” at Giants Stadium in New Jersey. Following that championship, the team didn’t win another trophy in NASL and the league collapsed following the 1984 season. Instead of disbanding the team, ownership rebranded and became the Vancouver 86ers the following year. This team won four consecutive Canadian Soccer League championships from 1988-1991. During that run they also had an astonishing 46-game unbeaten streak, comprised of 37 wins and nine draws.
In 2001, the 86ers became the Whitecaps again. New owner Greg Kerfoot led the franchise into their next era by developing a women’s side, an academy program and a grassroots youth progam, all falling under the Vancouver Whitecaps name. The men’s team also joined USL and in 2006 the team won the USL First Division championship, following that up with another victory in 2008.
Then 2009 came and the ‘Caps were named as an MLS expansion franchise, entering the league as the 17th member, and beginning play in 2011. Their first match was against long-time Canadian rival Toronto FC. Despite their success at the USL level, the Whitecaps were a flat-out bad franchise for the majority of their first decade in MLS, missing the playoffs in six of their first ten seasons.
But things have shifted positively in recent years for Vancouver. They’ve qualified for the postseason three straight times and won the Western Conference Final last year before falling to Inter Miami in MLS Cup. They’ve carried over all that momentum and then some in 2026, currently sitting in first place in the Western Conference with 46 points from their 23 matches. The Whitecaps have a staggering +31 goal differential and have poured in a massive 52 goals thus far, making them one of the most potent offenses in the league. It’s not just the offense that is humming, as they’ve also only conceded 21 goals, good for second best behind only the Supporter’s Shield leaders Nashville SC. When you’re tops in your conference in goals scored and goals conceded, you’re probably a pretty good team (super hot take, look out).
The Whitecaps are not hurting for talent at any position. Paced by 30-year-old goal-scoring extraordinaire Brian White, the team features an attacking front of White (14 goals), Bundesliga legend and World Cup champion Thomas Müller (7 goals), Ryan “Scottish Messi” Gauld (3 goals), and Emmanuel Sabbi (4 goals). Gauld has missed significant time over the last two seasons and has only played 564 minutes so far in 2026. With the Scotsman finding his form, this is arguably the most dangerous attacking front in MLS right now.
On the defensive side of the ball, the talent level does not drop. Andres Cubas, arguably one of the most underrated players in the league, controls the defensive midfield and provides a level of nasty that the ‘Caps lean on to maintain their typical vice grip on opponents, especially in the friendly confines of BC Place. Cubas was an integral part to Paraguay’s sensational run in the World Cup this summer and is one of the most skilled defensive midfielders in the league.
The back line is also loaded with players like Tristan Blackmon, Mathias Laborda, and Edier Ocampo. Blackmon and Laborda form one of the best center back duos in the league (oh, and Ranko Veselinovic is still here but injured) and Ocampo is a threat on both sides of the ball, as he can not only lock down attacking wing players looking to make inroads down the left, but gets involved in the offense routinely up his side of the field.
To highlight how dominant this team has been, here are a few categories that they rank in the top five in MLS in: goals per match (2nd), goals conceded per match (2nd), possession (4th), clean sheets (4th), expected goals (1st), expected goal differential (1st), shots on target per match (1st), big chances created (2nd), accurate passes per match (4th), touches in opposition box (1st), corners (5th), set piece goals (3rd), expected goals conceded (1st), tackles per match (1st), possession won in the final third (1st), and set piece goals conceded (1st).
It’s safe to say that this is a REALLY good team.
Austin FC Recent Form
The clock may have struck midnight on a potential Cinderella story for Austin FC after not picking up at least four points from their last two home matches against two incredibly beatable sides in San Jose Earthquakes and the Colorado Rapids.
As slim as the chances were to claw all the way back, you absolutely needed to make the most of that two-game home stand to give yourself a real chance at making things interesting. The results were frustrating by themselves, but when you pair the disappointing scorelines with the fact that almost every other result across the Western Conference went in favor of Austin on both matchdays, it becomes painstakingly clear that this team may just have run out of time.
Now, Austin stares down the barrel of two road matches in the upcoming weeks in venues where they’ve never secured three points. The first is obviously at BC Place this Sunday against the Whitecaps and the second is next weekend up in Frisco against an incredibly dangerous FC Dallas club who are all of a sudden tied for third in the Western Conference. Even for the most optimistic/delusional of fans (me), it’s nearly impossible to find an avenue in which Austin can pull off a miracle without pulling some unexpected wins out of their rear end.
Of course, stranger things have happened.
Speaking of frustration, it appears that the team has reached a boiling point. Video of Brandon Vazquez punching a chair after being subbed off against Colorado gained a lot of traction on social media, and while my esteemed co-host and I downplayed the moment, Vazquez has reached a point where he’s no longer able to hide his frustration.
For a season that has gone the way it has, it shouldn’t shock anyone that the players might be reaching a breaking point. With our friend Hernan Gonzales of We Are Austin TV reporting that there was a noticeable tension in the locker room post-game, it’s tough to blame them for having tempers flare considering how challenging this 2026 season has been. And we say that as fans, it’s exponentially worse for the guys lacing their boots up week in and week out.
The injury to Myrto Uzuni couldn’t have come at a worse time as Austin precariously holds onto hope of finding their way into a playoff position. Uzuni, who has been an ironman since arriving in Austin, is dealing with a lower body injury that has kept him out of the last three games. To make matters worse, it comes at a time when Uzuni was playing arguably his best soccer since joining the club prior to the 2025 season. If he’s not available on Sunday, the already slim chances Austin has to pull off an upset become even more dire.
Odds be damned. At least that’s the mentality headed into this one. There’s a reason why games aren’t played on paper and Austin will have an opportunity to pull off a miracle win that could provide the momentum needed to make an improbable run to the playoff line. We’ll see come Sunday.

Vancouver Whitecaps Players to Watch
Ryan Gauld - After missing the majority of both the 2025 and 2026 seasons, “Scottish Messi” is finally back on the pitch and rounding into form. Gauld has found his stride as of late, scoring two goals in his last 193 minutes of action. His presence alone adds an entire new threat to arguably the most dangerous offense in the league. He didn’t get the “Scottish Messi” nickname randomly, he earned it through years of dynamic play that frequently brings out the surrender cobras in opposing stadiums. His left foot is incredibly goal dangerous and Gauld is also a willing and capable passer. He makes his teammates better and has a wonderful connection with attacking mate Brian White. Gauld has directly assisted White 15 times since they both started playing together in Vancouver with their first ever connection coming against, you guessed it, Austin FC on August 18, 2021.
Austin FC Keys to the Game
Pride - With the pair of letdown results in Austin over the past week behind us, it’s hard to think that anything but the makings of a blowout loss are present in this matchup. The team you are matched up against is significantly better than you on paper, your most productive player (Uzuni) is hurt, and there are reports of locker room frustrations boiling over. The hopes of making an improbable run to the postseason this fall appear all but lost. Pride becomes the biggest factor on Sunday. As a player, you’ll never get this season back. You’ll never get this game back. You’ve got to find a way to dig deep and play for not only the pride of the club, but for your individual pride as well. Give ‘em hell boys!
