Austin FC has a 3W-2D-6L all-time record against Portland Timbers.
The Timbers are a storied MLS franchise that will always have a special place in the hearts of longtime Austin FC fans. Portland was the opponent for the Verde & Black’s first ever victory at Q2 Stadium on July 1, 2021 and every time the Timbers pop up on the schedule we have to revisit the highlights from that glorious night.
ATX also defeated the Timbers 3-1 at home two months later in that inaugural season, but it’s been all Portland since those first two meetings.
Portland Timbers Recent Form
The Timbers came into MLS as an expansion side in 2011. They are another “phoenix club” and are the fourth soccer-based franchise in Portland to carry the name, originating with the Timbers club that played in the NASL from 1975-82.
The MLS version of the Timbers have always played at Providence Park, a historically significant stadium that is the oldest soccer specific stadium in MLS. The grounds have existed since 1893 and as a complete stadium since 1926. The support in Portland rivals any MLS fan base, as the Timbers Army helped the club sell out Providence Park for every home match between expansion in 2011 and the COVID pandemic in 2020.
The Timbers had a ton of success in their first decade in the league, making three appearances in the MLS Cup Final, winning the 2015 title and finishing as the runners up in 2018 and 2021. They also finished as the top seed in the Western Conference in both 2013 and 2017 along with winning the MLS Is Back tournament in 2020.
But it’s been a low period for the Timbers of late, as they haven’t finished higher than eighth in the Western Conference since the 2021 push to the MLS Cup Final. Prior to that they had finished no lower than seventh for nine straight seasons.
Portland made a few moves around the fringes coming into 2026, trading promising young midfielder David Ayala to Inter Miami and losing eight-year Timbers veteran Cristian Paredes, who went back to his native Paraguay. They added dynamic midfielder Cole Bassett from Colorado Rapids and fullback Brandon Bye from New England Revolution.
Unsurprisingly, not making significant changes to last year’s eighth seed resulted in a slow start for the Timbers in 2026. It ended up costing head coach Phil Neville his job, as he was let go prior to the World Cup break. The team elevated Timbers2 head coach Jack Cassidy to interim as they underwent their coaching search.
Coach Cassidy had a brief but successful tenure in charge, including a sweep of their Cascadia Cup (the PNW version of the Copa Tejas that also includes Vancouver Whitecaps) rivals in the Seattle Sounders, including a 5-1 whooping that sent shockwaves through both of the respective fan bases.
The Timbers hired Marti Cifuentes as the team’s new head coach on July 21 and he officially took the reins in person after Leagues Cup Phase 1. Cifuentes has been coaching since age 20 and was most recently manning the sidelines for Leicester City in the EFL Championship.
Portland has had a busy secondary transfer window, sending out forward Felipe Mora (who was with the club for seven seasons) to Atletico San Luis and transferring U22 Initiative forward Kevin Kelsy to Rangers in Scotland. They also brought in forward Vincent Janssen, a Dutch forward who was both previously a player for Rayados in Liga MX and in Austin FC transfer rumors multiple times back in 2021 and 2022. He was most recently with Royal Antwerp in Belgium after departing Rayados in 2022.
This team might be worse than their current ninth place standing in the Western Conference. They’re 7th in MLS in goals per game, but have generated the 10th fewest xG on the season. They’ve allowed the tenth most goals per game while their xGA of sixth most in MLS provides an even bleaker outlook. With the turnover in the attack recently, this could be a vulnerable Timbers side that Austin FC can sneak up on this Saturday.
Austin FC Recent Form
While Wednesday’s Leagues Cup quarterfinal loss against Toluca was a disappointment for the Verde faithful, the spirits after the match among the fan base were decidedly one of pride. Those sentiments were echoed by interim head coach Davy Arnaud in his postgame comments as well.
If we take a look back at the ten matches that Austin FC just played over the last 36 days (holy schedule congestion), it certainly could have been worse. Across both competitions that the team has been playing, they’ve won four of those matches, lost four and drawn two. Three of those losses (at Houston, at Colorado and home against FC Dallas) were flat out poor performances, while Wednesday’s loss against Toluca wasn’t anything to be ashamed of. Not to mention that one of those draws was a penalty shootout win against Club América!
I’m not going to sit here and try to convince you that this team is turning things around into a late playoff push, although they do mathematically have the time to do so, I’m not that drunk on the Verde kool-aid at this point.
But as I take stock of my own fan emotions prior to Saturday night’s match against Portland, I count seven of the ten results as positive outcomes. Considering how low we were following the back-to-back road losses against Houston and Colorado, I think that there’s credit due to both Arnaud and his fellow coaches, along with the player personnel for buying in to what the interim staff is selling.
The bottom has not fallen out for Austin FC on the pitch, even though they’re currently two slots below the senior roster minimum following the bevy of exits during the current transfer window. This is a team that has gone toe-to-toe with every opponent over the last seven games, save the gross first half against FC Dallas at home two weekends ago.
Following Wednesday’s disappointing Leagues Cup exit, it would be easy for the Verde and Black to catch a butt whooping this Saturday against a more rested home side in the Timbers. But Arnaud has done a decent job at worst at rotation among his shorthanded roster during this stretch. Both Brandon Vazquez and Facundo Torres came off the bench on Wednesday, which should lead to both guys being in the starting XI against Portland.
We’ll likely see changes at other positions. Can Mikkel Desler play 60-plus minutes at this point? He played the entire second half on Wednesday, the most minutes for the fullback since May 23rd. That’s just one of many decisions ahead of Arnaud in this one.

Philadelphia Union Players to Watch
Kristoffer Velde - It’s not just the fact that Portland’s 26-year-old Norwegian DP winger wears #99 that made me compare Velde to a “Bud Light Bouanga” on Thursday’s Episode 329. He hit the ground running last season after arriving in the secondary transfer window, breathing new life and leadership into the Timbers attack. He’s got five goals and nine assists in league play this season and is a fiery personality. Velde is half-Argentinian and has carried the nickname “Veldinho”.
David da Costa - The Timbers second of their two DPs is the 25-year-old Portuguese attacking midfielder. Da Costa has really rounded into form following the World Cup break this season, now up to three goals and seven assists across his 18 appearances in league play. Da Costa spent the entirety of his youth and professional career with RC Lens in France prior to arriving in Portland before the 2025 season.
Austin FC Keys to the Game
90 More - It’s been a whirlwind of a schedule for the Verde and Black since they returned to play following the World Cup break on July 22. Austin FC has played ten games in those thirty six days, while balancing the two competitions they were competing in and battling against a player personnel drain throughout, with six outbound players in that time and the only reinforcements being in the form of Przemysław Płacheta and Jorge Alastuey. Both of those guys have been solid at worst in their roles, but it doesn’t change the challenges presented by the reality this roster is facing at this time. The club still has six days to make some late additions in this current transfer window, but none of those potential players will factor in to this one. With the loss against Toluca on Wednesday, Austin FC has a “regular” week ahead, with no midweek game before hosting San Jose Earthquakes on the weekend. But before that, league play resumes for the Verde and Black in Portland on Saturday and they’ve got 90 more minutes to finish this stretch on a positive note. Once the final whistle blows against the Timbers, the guys can have a real rest for a few days, but until then there are 90 more minutes to maintain the upbeat vibes.
