Welcome back to Leagues Cup! Austin FC has advanced to the quarterfinals of the tournament to take on Toluca, so let’s familiarize ourselves with the latest Liga MX opponent of the Verde and Black.
Founded in 1917 as Deportivo Toluca Futbol Club, the Red Devils (or Los Diablos Rojos) are a storied franchise in Mexico with a history spanning more than a century.
Toluca joined the Segunda División in 1950 and won promotion in short order just three years later. Many decades of success followed under the supervision of longtime club owner, Nemesio Díez Riega, who took over ownership of the franchise at the request of the Mexican president following the death of the previous team owner.
Díez had held managerial roles as well as serving as a sponsor of Toluca FC prior to becoming owner. He was so prominent and influential during his tenure that Toluca’s stadium now bears his name. Estadio Nemesio Díez, also known as El Infierno or La Bombonera, is located in the heart of Toluca.
Los Diablos Rojos found their first stretch of sustained success in 1966, when they won their first major title in the Primera División, which is now Liga MX. When they won the league again in 1967, Toluca firmly planted itself on the map of Mexican soccer.
To date, Toluca has won 12 Liga MX championships, three CONCACAF Champions Cup titles, two Copa México titles, and five Campeón de Campeones titles. After a 15-year drought spanning the 2010’s, the club has gotten back to its former dominance. They won back-to-back Liga MX titles in 2025, bringing home four trophies in a calendar year. Los Diablos Rojos followed that banner year up with a CONCACAF Champions Cup title earlier in 2026. Toluca’s recent success signals that this franchise is a global force to be reckoned with.
This is not the first “golden era” of soccer in Toluca however, as perhaps their most successful run of form stretched from the late 1990’s to the late 2000’s, when the club won seven championships in 13 seasons. Those teams were paced by the most popular player in Toluca history, José Saturnino Cardozo. The Paraguayan striker played for Toluca from 1995-2005 and scored 258 goals for the club, along with four Liga MX titles.
The current success of the team is largely in part due to some of the fantastic talent they have amassed all across the field. It starts with Paulinho, the Portuguese striker who arrived in Toluca in 2024 and is the centerpiece of Toluca’s attack. He already has two 20-goal seasons under his belt and has been absolutely blistering offensively in Toluca’s recent run of success, winning Liga MX MVP in 2024-2025 and being awarded Best Player in the 2026 CONCACAF Champions Cup. Fortunately for Austin fans, Paulinho has not played since May 30 due to a calf strain and is doubtful to appear in Wednesday night’s game, at least in a starting capacity.
While he will surely be missed, Toluca is not hurting for talent in his stead, with players like Alexis Vega, Helinho and Franco Romero.
We’ll start with Vega. The 28-year-old Mexican national team veteran lines up on the wing in Toluca’s attack and is in his second stint with his boyhood club after rejoining the team in 2023. Vega got his start with Toluca in 2015 before making the move to Chivas in 2018. He is a versatile attacking player with great technical skills and also has showcased the ability to make his teammates better.
Helinho (awesome name) is an explosive Brazilian winger with elite speed. He primarily lines up on the right wing, so a potential matchup against fellow Brazilian Guilherme Biro could be very fun. Helinho has 16 goals in his 69 appearances for Toluca and is the player they look to spring free in behind the line where he can best utilize his speed.
Protecting the net is Luis García, a veteran goalkeeper who has 162 career appearances for Toluca. In his 180 minutes of action in Leagues Cup, he’s allowed just one goal. That success is also largely in part to a formidable Toluca defense that allowed only 24 shots in the three tournament matches, compared to their SEVENTY FOUR shots taken. Yes, you are reading that properly. I am not sure if there are Leagues Cup record books anywhere, but 74 shots in three games has to be up there. Poor Seattle endured 40 of them alone!
Toluca had the right to select which neutral site this game will be played thanks to pre-tournament rankings. It was a bit of a shock to Austin fans to see that Toluca selected Sports Illustrated Stadium in Harrison, New Jersey, to host the game. Apparently, they’ve drawn large crowds of fans in Harrison before, which played a factor into their decision. The fact this match must be played at a neutral site could be a blessing in disguise for Austin FC, as playing in Toluca is about as challenging as it gets in North America. Estadio Nemesio Díez sits at approximately 8,760 feet above sea level!
Los Diablos Rojos are certainly ready to add another trophy to their case and maintain the torrid pace they’ve established over the last two years.
Austin FC Recent Form
A pesky Austin FC team stands in the shadow of yet another Liga MX powerhouse. Can Austin play the role of David again and find a way to upset a club that just put together one of the greatest 18-month stretches for any Liga MX team ever? We’ll have our answer Wednesday night.
It’s been hard to gauge how Austin has looked as of late. On one hand, the three performances in Leagues Cup were all in the good to great range. On the other hand, the return to MLS play after the World Cup break has been erratic at best and downright atrocious at worst.
For example, after dispatching Club America in penalty kicks (one of Austin’s most exciting results in team history), the club followed it up with one of the most abysmal halves of the season (and that’s saying something) against Dallas. Unable to overcome that 45 minutes of next to nothing, Austin was unable to secure any points in a home game versus a bitter rival.
Here in The North End, we take points however we can get them. But while I’m satisfied with the midweek victory at Lumen Field, beating Seattle, arguably the worst team in the league at the moment, should not be taken as an indicator of a sudden turnaround for the Verde and Black’s playoff hopes.
Then came the Philadelphia game at home, another opportunity for Austin to secure three points at home after the disappointment against Dallas. While it was an exciting back-and-forth affair between two teams who are fighting to stave off the wooden spoon, my overall takeaway from that match was simple. This just isn’t a good team.
Pair that with the reported departures of both Jayden Nelson (check out our latest livestream discussing that report) and CJ Fodrey (that we reported on Monday) and the team is down two more rotation players as the 2026 campaign crawls into its final third.
As hard as it’s been to truly believe in this Austin FC team this season, a run to a Leagues Cup title, as unlikely as it seems even as the team has qualified for the knockout rounds, is Austin’s only plausible path to a piece of hardware this year that isn’t a wooden spoon. This match is quite likely the most important remaining on the Verde and Black’s 2026 schedule and as a fan I’m treating it as such.

Toluca FC Players to Watch
Alexis Vega - As mentioned on Episode 328, Vega is a very technical wing player who elevates his teammates and delivers timely service to the variety of skilled players surrounding him in the Toluca attack. Vega has a goal and an assist in his two appearances in Leagues Cup so far and has created nine chances total. He’s going to get other players involved in dangerous areas and will need to be accounted for by the defensive midfield, as his right foot usually carries him towards the center of the pitch from his natural left wing position.
Austin FC Keys to the Game
Will The Real Austin FC Please Stand Up? - Maybe the reality is that the real Austin FC has already shown itself plenty this year. Maybe Bill Parcells was right when he said that “you are what your record says you are,” and Austin is simply bad. Maybe the mountains of evidence laid before me 24 games into this season is all true and Austin is deserving of their 14th place position in the Western Conference and are a true threat to take home the Wooden Spoon. Or! Maybe the flashes of brilliance this team has displayed at times since the return from the World Cup break, particularly in Leagues Cup, should be carrying more weight. Maybe the injuries were insurmountable at the beginning of the season and Coach Estévez was just never the right man for the job. I can continue to speculate for days, but the opportunity to show who you REALLY are is there for the taking on Wednesday night. I’ll choose to believe that this team has what it takes to get the job done!
